WHAT IS DBT?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy can help you find balance in your life between what you feel and what you know. DBT is a heavily skills based therapy that requires practice on your own time as well as in session. You will learn coping skills to tolerate painful emotions but also ways to create positivity and purpose in your life.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy where you talk with a counselor about your feelings and reactions while challenging them and looking for a balance in emotion and logic. Some people feel emotions more strongly than others, and DBT helps them learn how to manage these intense feelings. It's useful for conditions like borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder, but really helpful for anyone! DBT teaches skills to handle tough situations and understand why you react the way you do, especially when things like family, relationships, or past experiences bring up strong emotions.

This means I will help you learn and practice skills to help you manage your emotions, have more control over them, think before you act, improve your relationships with others, and learn how to cope with painful emotions. In simpler terms, "getting better" through DBT means feeling more in control of your emotions, getting along better with others, and being better equipped to handle difficult situations without feeling overwhelmed.

The treatment consists of weekly individual session that would include a combination of skill building, psychoeducation, and self-monitoring.

INTERPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS

FAQS

Common questions about DBT.

  • It is encouraged. Homework may include skills practice, assignment sheets, or self-monitoring. These can be done on paper, online, or on an app. However, therapy is tailored to your needs so if homework does not work for you we will not focus on it, but adjust accordingly.

  • Being able to control your emotions is a crucial skill for living a good life and staying focused on what's happening around you. This ability is linked to overall well-being. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that teaches people how to manage their emotions effectively. It was first created to help those with borderline personality disorder, who often struggle with intense emotional pain that can lead to self-harm and suicide attempts. Today, DBT is also used to treat other conditions where managing emotions is difficult, especially when other therapies haven't worked.

  • DBT aims to help people with long-term issues make lasting changes in their behavior, so it typically takes six months to a year. The therapy includes weekly one-on-one therapy sessions including learning and practicing new skills. Research has shown that people often see improvement, especially in reducing self-harm, within a year. However, some individuals might need therapy for several years.
